This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.
Part A: Curriculum music
This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.
At St Paul’s we teach weekly music lessons from Reception to Year 6. Children sing in smaller groups for Prayer and Liturgy, and lessons have lots of opportunity for children to listen and respond. The curriculum covers a variety of genres, musicians and time periods. Children are asked to recall information from prior lessons to ensure key knowledge and skills are embedded before continuing with their learning. During music lessons, knowledge and skills are taught through a combination of practical and written tasks. Our curriculum has been planned and designed in collaboration with the other Lumen Christi MAC primary schools. St Thomas Aquinas, our MAC secondary school, provides termly support and CPD.
Potential next step · Children to have the opportunity of learning an instrument. |
Part B: Extra-curricular music
St Paul’s offers a variety of co-curricular music activities including a school choir, participation in end of year performances and opportunities to work with St Thomas Aquinas Secondary with Christmas and Easter productions. These activities provide students with the chance to further develop their musical talents outside the regular curriculum. To enhance the co-curricular music programme, potential next steps could include: • Introduce music workshops or an after- school club to promote different genres of music. |
Part C: Musical experiences
St Paul’s provides a rich array of musical experiences for its students, including singing in mass and assembly, singing for the local community at Christmas time. The children have attended the Christmas Pantomime in the Alexander Theatre and some classical music event at the Symphony Hall. All these experiences have been provided free of charge. Throughout the year, classes are supported with music lessons and CPD is provided by a music specialists from the local academy secondary school.
Potential next steps:
• Arrange for musicians to come into school to provide workshops for the children. |
In the future
Looking ahead, St Pauls’ aims to provide music workshops and the opportunity for the children to learn an instrument These future plans will create a platform for students to collaborate, perform, and develop their musical skills in a group setting.
