Design & Technology
Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of context, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Working in this discipline, children learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.
Skills
- Cook – children will learn to cook from recipes which gradually build basic culinary skills. While they are practising the practical skills, children will be learning about concepts relating to food such as nutrition, food production and food from different cultures.
- Sew - children will practise using fabric and thread to learn basic sewing techniques to create objects which demonstrate embroidery, applique, weaving and plaiting. Children will learn about the properties of different fabrics, fast fashion, waste, recycling and pollution
- Build - children will learn about the creation of structures and mechanical and electrical devices to create products such as cars, moving cards, toys and books. Alongside the practical side of building, children will learn about forces, motion and the properties of materials.
